NYS does not routinely test ticks, neither do local health departments.

Paul Smiths college, SUNY Adirondack and others are trying to prove how serious the risk is in all of NY State. Cited in this article over 50% of ticks tested were positive for Lyme.

The medical community has not kept up with the actual threat, labeling many areas low risk, including our area. They are not. SUNY Adirondack found ticks on the top of Whiteface Mountain which surprised them, but to shock them even more 25% were positive for Lyme.

Prevention is the only guarantee against tick borne illnesses.

UNH research team led by Professor Eva Sapi is the first to show that the microorganisms that cause Lyme Disease are resistant to treatment due to what’s called a biofilm. A biofilm – which has a protective layer of “slime” – allows the organisms to hide away from antibiotics at the microscopic level. In fact, this biofilm boosts therapy resistance by nearly 1,000 times.

Typical LYME tests may miss... Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., have discovered a new species of tick-borne bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The new species, provisionally named Borrelia mayonii, after the clinic, has been found only in the upper Midwest but may be present elsewhere.
